Mike Melito on the Jazz Mad Lab's album "Verb-ation"
One of the best things about jazz is it can have no boundaries. The beauty of the music lies in where the music can go. The Jazz Mad Lab debut release Verb-ation, takes us to many beautiful places. The CD is comprised of compositions by drummer Sean Jefferson played by Sean and his fine group. Pianist Chris Ziemba and bassist Neal Dreger work hand in glove with Jefferson to create a wonderful springboard for the band to create their music. The interplay between all the musicians creates alot of tension and release and gives the music an overall floating feeling. There are many highlights to this CD. The title track Verb-ation is a fine example of the groups interaction and dynamics. Trumpeter Jeff Ostroski and saxophonist Matt Stuver have a unique blend together on the whole CD. Almost like they were made for each other. The added vocalists on a few tracks enhances the overall mood of the recording too.
As for the leader Sean Jefferson, his compositions are very innovative. He uses some odd time signatures to great effect here. Sean creates a nice comfort zone within these time signatures as well. He plays with a strong conviction and feeling throughout this CD. Check out his fine soloing at the end of Oh, But Tomorrow over the vamp. He starts sparsely and builds his solo moving around the drums and cymbals with ease. All told, a highly recommended CD! I look forward to watching the bands journey.
